Girardeau" To: cegrads@u.washington.edu Subject: Message from John Stanton on earthquake conference (fwd) Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII This message describes an opportunity for students to attend the 6th National Conference on Earthquake Engineering for free. The conference this year is being held in Seattle 31 May - 4 June 1998. It is held every four years and is the premier conference in the country for earthquake engineering. The conference chairs are John Hooper (at Skillings) and Trish Bolton (at Batelle). Many UW faculty and staff are involved. John Stanton is co-chair of the Technical Program Committee. EERI, (the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute and the conference sponsors), are looking for student volunteers to help at the conference. They are offering free registration at the conference, which allows you to attend all sessions, in return for one day of work. The normal registration fee for the conference is $475, which you will, of course not have to pay. Essentially all the big names in earthquake engineering will be there. The primary jobs that need doing are * Helping with registration in the mornings (mostly on the first day, Monday 1 June). * Helping in the individual sessions (changing slides on projectors, dealing with overhead projectors, dealing with the lights, etc) EERI would expect you to commit to doing two half days (e.g. complete two mornings, or one complete morning plus one complete afternoon, etc.) Times to be arranged with EERI. If you are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity, please contact Patricia Peck at EERI directly. (Patricia@eeri.org or (510)-451-0905). She will assemble a list of student volunteers and organize a roster to ensure that all sessions are covered and all students work at times that allow them to have free time to attend sessions in which they are interested.
