To: waphgis@u.washington.edu Subject: RE: software X-mailer: Connect2-SMTP 4.00 MHS to SMTP Gateway Responding to Torney Smith, in my view MapInfo is the overall best product out there for desktop GIS - I am not surprised it's serving his needs. A few reviewers I have seen here and there say the same thing. Once I saw in GeoInfo Systems the list as MapInfo, Maptitude, Arcview - they reviewed three. The programming language, MapBasic is easy to use. There is an add-on for MapInfo made by Northwood Systems in Canada called "Vertical Mapper". Health people may want to check it out. I think the url is www.northwood.sys, however for sure its on the MapInfo site. MapInfo is at www.mapinfo.com Maptitude at www.caliper.corp Incidentally if you map needs are limited, MS Excel has some mapping capacity and there is a new MS product coming out (Map 2000 or similar). Its not release yet. Check the Microsoft www site. MapInfo has an active user listserve. MapInfo-L. See www.mapinfo.com to get connected. It's a great group. The discussion is usually among pretty sophisticated users which is good for the rest of us. I do not hesitate to ask the lowest level question, I always get an answer and one that is as least as good as tech support. Richard E.
