On Tuesday, February 17, from 8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Eastern time, Secretary Riley will host a live discussion with a panel including Seattle Superintendent John Stanford & Washington Mutual Chair, President & CEO Kerry Killinger. The panel will look at standards-based reforms in the Seattle Public Schools & Washington state, and they will discuss how schools, families, businesses & communities can work together to create high expectations & raise student achievement. Schools & communities in Seattle & throughout Washington have worked to develop higher standards, increase accountability & raise student achievement. Washington is one of several states developing "competency-based" college admissions standards, which are based on specific skills & knowledge. Secretary Riley will also deliver his 5th annual State of American Education Address on February 17th, which will be broadcast live from Seattle from 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Eastern time. The Secretary will discuss new education initiatives outlined by President Clinton in his State of the Union Address, & highlight progress made this past year. The Secretary's address & the Satellite Town Meeting will both be webcast live (audio & video) by NASA's Quest Project. To find out if the Town Meeting is being broadcast regularly, you may want to call your local cable access station. If not, you might ask them to broadcast the program. Many cable access stations are willing to broadcast free programs like this one if requested by a community member. It is also possible to organize your own downlink site the evening of the program.
