Hopefully some of you might like to join me! I am a graduate student in the Architecture department, presently working on my thesis, which is focusing on community development through participatory processes. I am working on the creation of a three-phase process of community awareness, community participation, and community based implementation. Through the Office of Minority Affairs I have recieved UIF grant funding to apply my thesis work to a small town of 3700 people, called Wapato. (The grant program is called Seamless Education and focuses on bringing UW students and WA communities together, to the benefit of both). The town is one of the highest recipients of welfare funds in the state, and is made up of very diverse peoples 60% Hispanic, 25% Native American, and a substantial number of Filipino-Americans, Japanese-Americans, and Caucasians. The response I have had from community members has been overwhelming. I began the process by organizing a Community Day which turned out to be quite successful. At present, I am working on phase II which will include organizing a community goal setting workshop in the beginning of February. I would really like to involve other UW students and/or faculty in this whole process. The Office of Minority Affairs is also very interested in having more UW people join in the project. Once the community has set their goals and decided which ones to act on there will be many more opportunities for UW students and faculty to get involved in projects with this small town. They are very eager to expand and deepen the connection with the UW. If anyone is interested in learning more or getting involved, please contact me...I would love to meet you!
