While studying Pharr's "Homeric Greek" today and forming some active
imperatives for practice, one of the forms we generated was the aor. imp.
of klazO, klagxon: which reminded everyone so much of "klaxon" that we
thought there must be a connection. The Shorter OED dates "klaxon" to 1914
and indicates only that it was a commercial name; does anyone know more
specifically how this name was devised, perhaps even to the point of
confirming derivation from the aorist imperative of klazO?
