We, students and faculty, had a very productive experience in service-learning on 11/21. These were first year undrgrad dental students. We hope to link such experiences in the first second years with required clinical rotations in communties throughout Washington. Currently, we conduct 4th year, 2 week elective rotations at extra-mural sites. About 20 students (40% of the class) eagerly participate. We have active affiliations with the Yakima Farm Workers' Clinic (Yakima, Toppenish, Grandview, Walla Walla) Yakima Neighborhood Health Services, Interfaith Family health center (Bellingham). We intend to have all students participate in service-learning experiences as a required course and are considering expanding the number of sites. The strong community support and obvious concern for mothers, infants and children in Lewis County has stimulated interest in initiating an on-going affiliation.
