Thank you.** Good my lords and ladies, allow me to bend your collective ears with a plea for promises to help. September Crown is fast approaching, and I have very few heralds to help work the erics and perambulate the site. There is a perception out there that you have to somehow pass through some mysterious initiation rites in order to do voice heraldry. * * * W R O N G * * * You don't even need to be an 'official' herald; all you need is the ability to project your voice and enunciate clearly. Why should you try it? First, it's lots of fun; you get to see most of the camp and thus learn where people are camped, where the merchants are and stuff. You get to meet a lot of folks; most people in their camps will offer a town crier a drop of something to cut the dust. (NOTE: This is an excellent reason to carry a tankard or goblet with you on your rounds!) If you do field heralding, you have a really excellent view of the fighting - at least on the eric you're working, and probably on the next nearest eric, too. Again, there's the opportunity to meet lots of folks. "But," you say, "I don't have regalia! I've never done this before! My voice falls out of my mouth and goes SPLAT! on the ground at my feet!" To this I say, "Regalia? Don't worry about it! If you're doing voice heraldry, your voice is your primary regalia, and we have loaner baldrics for on-duty heralds to use. You've never done voice heraldry before? I can give you the five-minute crash course in the essentials of town crying, and the ten-minute crash course in the essentials of field heralding. AND we supply cheat sheets! You can't even out-shout a mouse? With some tips and practice, even the most diminutive of gentles can resemble a foghorn!" Please, if you are interested at all, or you already do voice heralding of any kind, drop me a line, let me know if you're going to September Crown and tell me you can do some voice heralding. I can live with restrictions - if you won't be there until Saturday noon, or you have to leave Monday, or you can't work afternoons - that's no problem. With enough heralds, no-one will have to do very much at all, unless they want to. Thank you for your attention, and we now return you to your regular mailing list. See you at September Crown!
