No doubt the Lectures Committee will be impressed and more inclined to subsidize Lowe's visit if we have such a high index of Graduate School support for Lowe. I'd also like to say that we must not let accumulated funds go to waste. I think a main responsibility of the Transnational Studies Project should be to allocate our funds in co-sponsorship of the upcoming American Studies Colloquium conference. We should assist in bringing a speaker to campus for that conference if funds permit (let us not foget that any unused funds do not "rollover" for next year's budget...) Our financial and intellectual resources should be directed towards that conference, until we have our own, without infringing in any way on the mission and goal of the American Studies Colloquium. I just want to avoid having to "give back" grant money. We might also consider co-sponsoring a one-day symposium on National Cinemas and Identity Politics that the Cinema Studies Colloquium will attempt to host in conjunction with "Thinking Sex in Transnational Times." We are currently trying to get acclaimed queer filmmaker Todd Haines ("Velvet Goldmine," "Poision," "Superstar") to campus. I'll keep you all posted! Also: All of you should have an "Awards and Grants" section on your CV, and should list our major awards as: Walter Chapin Simpson Center for the Humanities at the UW.
