It is definitely a film that "foregrounds" (indeed, caresses) the Eternal City. It's also a delightful story (though perhaps I should be upfront and admit that I am a big Hepburn fan). The film is witty, entertaining, and, at the end, quite touching. There is only one problem with it, in my view---it's a film that screams out for color, but it's in black and white. I recall reading somewhere that Wyler deeply regretted this, but the extra money for color was just not forthcoming for a project "foregrounding" not only the Eternal City but a then quite unknown actress. (By the way, the International Movie Database lists Dalton Trumbo as the main writer. Did he appear as such on the credits, I wonder?
