You might check the OCLC at your library (a comprehensive list of holdings in the major libraries of the US and so a pretty good source for this information--includes manuscripts etc. going back to 1500's and before). Alternative, you could check your library's holdings of the National Union Catalog which did the same thing in pre-computer days. This is an extensive several book shelf series organized by date of publication (pre-1956 would be yours) and then by author.
