BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES Can you help us to let students at your community college know about our quarterly informational meetings we hold for prospective transfer students and UW pre-majors interested in the biological sciences? Attached is a copy of the flyer for our spring quarter sessions. NOTE: hard copies will be sent to you through postal mail. These monthly meetings have been of great benefit to students interested in transferring to the University of Washington and pursuing degrees in biological sciences. Without careful planning of course work while they are still attending the community college, many transfer students find themselves "left behind" in science majors at UW; a number of new transfer students are disappointed to learn that they have three or four additional years ahead of them toward earning a bachelor's degree, instead of the two additional years they were anticipating. Our goal is to provide them with information as early as possible in their academic careers. Information sessions include UW majors in cell biology, conservation biology, botany, zoology, and neurobiology, with referrals to other life science units across campus such as biochemistry, fisheries, forestry, oceanography, and environmental studies. We present a comparison of basic introductory science courses (in chemistry, calculus, biology, and physics) as well as advice about making a smooth transition to UW from a community college, choosing a major and meeting UW departmental admission requirements. We appreciate your help each quarter in posting these flyers and making your students aware of these sessions. Additional information about UW's Biology Program can be found on the web at http://www.biology.washington.edu/biology/. We can also be reached by departmental e-mail at bioladv@u.washington.edu, or by telephone at (206) 543-9120. Please contact our office any time with questions, information about your programs, comments, or suggestions. We'd welcome the opportunity to speak with you about your program and ours.
