I'm on the steering committee of the Palo Alto Chapter of the Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility (CPSR). I'm organizing a Chapter Meeting around the topic of Geographical Information Systems and a particular project here in the SF Bay Area called BADGER (Bay Area Digital GeoResource system). This meeting will one or two within the BADGER organization joined by a user of BADGER data (e.g. a water agency), and with someone from the environmental side of things. The goal is to identify and discuss social and environmental concerns which may arise as a result of the computerization of geographical resource mapping. For example: Will such mapping increase the power and operating efficiency of those who exploit these resources harmfully more than those who seek to protect these resources? Through what particular mechanisms will harm come? What measures should be taken to ensure that these efforts do more good than harm? I'm looking for someone to join us who would bring the perspective of indigenous peoples and indigenous knowledge to the discussion. Is there anyone in this area (SF Bay Area) who would be interested in participating in such an event? Referals would also be appreciated as well. Sincerely, Dave Lewis Steering Committee Member Palo Alto Chapter Computer Professionals For Social Responsibility .
