Belak Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory ABSTRACT The molecular dynamics computer simulation method has been applied to the study of shock waves in condensed matter with varying degrees of success. After reviewing the varies methods of generating the shock wave, we find the reference frame of the shock to be particularly useful. For in this frame only, the flux of mass, momentum, and energy have constant values everywhere when the profile is steady. Exploiting this frame, we examine in detail the sequence of thermodynamic states through which the material transforms during shock loading. Recently, Holian and coworkers observed homogeneous nucleation of dislocations during very large scale MD simulations of shock loading in FCC crystals. Here we review and present and analysis of these results. -- LaDonna Kennedy Chemical Engineering phone: 206/543-2754 fax: 206/685-3451 email: kennedy@cheme.washington.edu .
