Officials say Denver's ultralight plane crashed off Monterey Bay, Calif., about 100 yards from shore. His body was so badly mangled, police were unable to officially identify it until receiving copies of his fingerprints from Colorado, where he lived most of the time. The cause of the crash is unknown. Denver reached the peak of his fame in the 1970s as a singer who moved between different styles of country, folk and pop music.
