Assuming it's not a duplicate of the introduction, I assume that you
would find of interest Epstein's moving memoir of Shils, "My Friend
Edward," the last essay in Epstein's latest (?) collection, "Narcissus
Leaves the Pool: Familiar Essays" (Houghton Mifflin, 1999).  In order
to supply some classical content here, I'll add that pp. 309-11 deal
with Shils' and Epstein's friendship with Arnaldo Momigliano.  When
Momigliano's heart condition seriously worsened, Shils moved him into
his own apartment and tended him assiduously.  Epstein writes: "I
recall Glen Bowersock, a dear friend of Arnaldo's, saying that he had
never seen anything quite like the way Edward looked after Arnaldo---
usually a lesser man might look after a greater, but here was one
great man extending himself completely for another."
