Smith" Reply-To: uwtbiz@u.washington.edu To: Tacoma Business Program Information Subject: URGENT***PETITION DELIVERY My peer business program students, A strategically advantageous opportunity has been put before us which will allow us to present our UWT Student Petition directly to all 21 members of one of the Big 5 Committees in Olympia this week, plus speak. Hey, I don't schedule these things, I just work around them. I know that this is Finals Week, believe me I know!!! The meeting is a PUBLIC HEARING of the SENATE WAYS & MEANS COMMITTEE The meeting is being held on Thursday, March 20 from 3:30 - 5:30 pm. I myself have a final exam over the noon hour, but plan to leave campus shortly after 1:30 pm to head to Olympia. I have spoken directly with the Legal Assistant for this committee and we will be able to sign in as a "panel" to speak before the committee. Our UWT Student Petition will be presented as our handout and those that choose to speak will be asked (by me) to give a personal perspective. IT DOES NOT GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!!! And these are exactly the circumstances under which we want to address this committee. The Public Hearing regards "Governor Locke's 1997-99 Operating and Capital Budget Proposals". That means us: The UWT. I know that this is really going to be a hardship for many of you to make this work, but if you are able to reschedule a final into an earlier time slot (if it is a multiple section class) or if it helps to know that you can be back on UWT campus by 6:30 pm, maybe it will encourage you to make a way to come. I can take 4-5 riders with me but no guarantees on a timely return. I want to be available to any of the Legislators if they have questions to ask or if we are pushed to the end of the agenda. I need firm commitments AS SOON AS POSSIBLE so that we can determine who is going and who is willing to speak directly to the committee. For those that do not desire to speak, we can certainly use a 2-3 short written paragraph description of you, why you chose the UWT, and what you expect to be able to use from the program in the future. This will give the Legislators a broader and more personal perspective of the impact of the UWT on real citizens of the South Puget Sound Region as your papers will also be used as handouts for the committee. There are 'no requirements' regarding this trip, I would only encourage each of you to participate to your level of comfort. This will be one of the highlight's of my 9 weeks of personal effort on this project. I sincerely desire and hope to share this experience with as many of my fellow UWT students and friends as possible! You are each represented in that Petition and should benefit personally! Thank you for your continued support.. Let's WOW em with our KSOA's! One additional note, I have not been able to secure a meeting directly with the Governor for Friday, March 21, but I will be returning to Olympia on that day anyway to finish distributing the balance of the Petitions to other members of the Legislature. For those students that had planned to go on Friday's trip, I will still be looking for ways to make that trip eventful also. I have not completely given up on the Governor, but the chances of success are diminishing. I still plan to go down early (be on campus at 9:00 am) so let me know if this trip interests you also. regards, Karen L. Lease-Smith .
