You may be interested to know that President Gerberding fended off a volley of questions ranging from mildly frustrated to genuinely hostile. Mica asked what would happen to the departments scheduled for possible elimination if the university were to receive a budget package which essentially eliminated the necessity for making a 2.4% budget cut. There were snickers and murmurs of approval when Gerberding said "That's a very good question, Mica." He took quite a long time answering it, basically saying that he wasn't sure what would happen and that if the university were granted a budget considerably more generous than they are currently expecting to receive the administration might, if they felt so inclined, save some of the programs. Shortly after Mica's question, I asked President Gerberding how exactly he planned to "do everything in [his] power to ensure that students enrolled in programs scheduled for elimination will be given a reasonable opportunity to finish their degrees." He at first tried to refer me to a memo to this effect which was distributed to department chairs as early as yesterday, but it didn't answer my question, so I posed it again, this time specifying how we were to finish our programs without teachers or staff. He looked put out, hemmed and hawed, used verbal fillers and finally reached the point of admitting that somehow, someway, the remaining tenured faculty would be required to take up the burden left by all those who had been fired, that of course this was an unworkable situation, and that some people would not be able to finish their degrees. I had to let him go at that, because there were many other folks who had questions for him, and I had already asked twice. I would dearly have liked to ask him the rest of our questions, but we were only given one hour of his precious time. Besides, he was obviously already quite annoyed, so I felt I had done my job. Not that I would have minded needling him further, you understand! I can give a more detailed report later, after the minutes have been released. This was entirely from memory because the discussion moved too quickly for me to take notes, hence, no figures. Questions can be conveyed to Gerberding through the president of GPSS, Judy Pine, who meets with him on a regular basis. If you would like to keep sending them to me I will print them and pass them on to Judy. I don't know if this will be any more effective than writing him directly, but it is another way of getting his attention. I was not encouraged by what he had to say.
