I had a call from a women whose brother came to live with her because of an abusive home. The parents live in Montana and because he lived with them half the year and with the sister half the year, she contends they can both claim him on 1996 tax returns. Is this accurate? The sister has temporary custody and the mother refuses to relinquish legal custody. The young man will graduate from a WA high school this spring and wants to attend WSU this fall. The law clearly says a dependent student's residency is based on the "parent or legal guardian's residency", but it seems harsh to punish the student for his parent's behavior and decisions. On the military situations, we require the same information as Virjean and Joseph. The problems we have are the active duty military where the person is stationed in Oregon, but live in Washington. We deny their residency because their official orders state Oregon as their base, but they really scream and we get phone calls from commanding officers complaining. It would appear that there is a lack of consistency state-wide on this one. At least we are told that other state schools allow residency in this situation. Are there plans for a meeting of residency officers this spring? I know you all met last spring, but did not know how often those meetings take place. I would love the opportunity, since I am relatively new. At 03:18 PM 3/17/97 -0800, you wrote: >Hi All-- > >I would like some input on two separate issues. > >l.
