I am lucky, I get just a little Spam. However, I fill out a complaint even if the likelihood of anything happening with respect to stopping it is remote. In WA there is a path, although not as wide as we would like, for dealing with it through the Attorney General's office. See below. WAPHGIS is set up so that only members can send things to WAPHGIS. We check out all subscribers to see if they are legitimate and we do not lend, sell, or share WAPHGIS list members' email addresses. As you are aware, even members do not know other member's addresses unless you include it in your message. Those of you from other states might like to share similar information. Although not a GIS & health topic, it might be interesting to know how the other 63 countries represented in WAPHGIS outside the US deal with Spam. Richard E. Hoskins' Sent: Thursday, September 02, 1999 1:45 PM Subject: RE: spam Dear Consumer, We have received your inquiry about illegal e-mail. We urge you to visit our web site at http:// www.wa.gov/ago/junkemail for more information. On June 11, 1998, Washington's law regulating the sending of unsolicited e-mail went into effect. Not all unsolicited e-mail is illegal under the new law. In general, you should only file a complaint if you believe the unsolicited e-mail you've received after June 11 is illegal under Washington's law. It is considered illegal if either the sender or recipient of the e-mail lives in Washington and if it contains: * a false or forged header, * a misleading subject line, OR * the sender uses an internet domain name without that party's permission If you would like to file a complaint regarding the receipt of illegal, unsolicited e-mail, our office can offer you some assistance. You can file a complaint by contacting junkemail@atg.wa.gov. The information you provide will be kept as part of our database of unsolicited e-mail complaints. If the AGO takes enforcement action against the sender of the e-mail, your complaint may be used as part of the basis of the action. We are prohibited by law from representing individual consumers and given the volume of complaints we receive, we cannot take individual enforcement action on behalf of every consumer who has received illegal e-mail. However, as the recipient of the e-mail or as an internet service provider you may wish to take your own enforcement action under the law. More about this is contained in the junk e-mail section on our web page mentioned above. If you have been able to provide an address the AGO will use your complaint as the basis for sending a notice to the sender if the e-mail contains a US Postal Service address, informing him or her of Washington's law, and warning against future violations. This address might be included in the body of the e-mail for the purpose of having you send a payment for a product or service We cannot force the sender to stop sending illegal e-mail into Washington. Only a court can make such an order. We can, however, work with you to inform the sender of the law, and put him or her on notice that violations of the law may lead to court action either by you, the internet service provider, or by the AGO. I sent back an eMAIL that as indicated would take me off the mailing list. More to the point, why should I have to do anything? Why do I have to spend my time and resources canceling a correspondence that I did not initiate? Some "crazy" genius has actually invented and patented a machine, called Oscar's Wild Ride, that literally attracts money. Our company has bought the worldwide rights to it. You can put these machines almost anywhere there are people, and it's like owning your own string of parking meters on a busy street. The money pours in like water...and it's all cash. There are no franchise fees or royalties. The profits are 100% yours! You can set-up a string of Oscars anywhere in the world and then go about your business, doing whatever you usually do. Then, every two or three weeks refill Oscar and take out the money that's waiting for you. It takes about 15-20 minutes per machine to refill, clean & collect the cash. There is no skill required. These machines have been called "unreal." Some of our owners have compared them to legal slot machines. Oscar is the world's fastest collector of quarters. We have real customer earning full-time income in part-time hours! If you are serious about wanting to get out of the rat race, this could be your personal escape plan. Oscar cannot be explained in words. We have made a video of Oscar in action, -on location,- so you can see for yourself how remarkable it works and the excitement he creates. Since we own the exclusive rights to Oscar, we are limiting the amount we will sell in any given area throughout the U.S. Once an area is sold out, it's gone forever! Since Oscar is patented, we have a lock on the market and can control it's distribution. Plus, it locks out any competition.
