The UW thereby joins twelve other universities nation-wide in systematically pursuing the need for 'sustainability science'. " Ed Miles, Director Certificate in Interdisciplinary and Policy Dimensions of the Earth Sciences The Earth Sciences play an indispensable role in a safe and prosperous society, but too often scientific wisdom does not translate to wise decision-making. This new program provides graduate students in the earth sciences a forum to explore interdisciplinary and policy dimensions of their science, and extend their graduate research to encompass those dimensions. Students earn a graduate degree in the home department, with the collaborative component recognized by the Graduate School as a Certificate in "Interdisciplinary and Policy Dimensions of the Earth Sciences". Program Goals and Benefits This unique and innovative program gives graduate students in the earth sciences a mechanism to extend and apply their thesis research to encompass interdisciplinary themes and policy perspectives. Students in this unique program: 1.. Apply earth sciences to issues of public policy 2.. Design their graduate research to help solve pressing problems confronting society 3.. Develop interdisciplinary thinking and problem-solving skills 4.. Experience the dilemma of crafting sensible policies in the face of ambiguous and often contradictory scientific findings Program Structure To provide a rich interdisciplinary experience, each student incorporates interdisciplinary dimensions into the thesis or dissertation. The student selects a dissertation/thesis committee led by two co-chairs: one from the degree-granting department and one from the cognate field. To provide academic depth and breadth, students design a customized program of study to match his or her individual interests, in consultation with the advisory committee and the Graduate Program Coordinator. Finally, as part of their program, all students complete a capstone seminar in "Interdisciplinary and Policy Dimensions of the Earth Sciences". This unique approach provides students a rich interdisciplinary experience with depth in their discipline and breadth in their selected cognate field. Application Procedures and Deadlines Graduate students enrolled in or entering a degree program in one of the participating departments are eligible to apply. Applications are accepted twice a year, with deadlines of October 15 and April 15. Applications should include: 1.. Letter of application (no more than about 500 words or 2 pages). 2.. C.V. (resume); 3.. Undergraduate and graduate transcripts (unofficial transcripts OK) Prior to submitting their application, students should obtain complete and up-to-date details on application procedures and announcements from our web site at: http://depts.washington.edu/poeweb/gradprograms/pdes/application.html Funding Outstanding students may earn a "Fellowship in Policy Dimensions of the Earth Sciences" to cover their support for two quarters while completing interdisciplinary and policy coursework. The deadlines and application procedures for the Fellowship coincide with program application deadlines. All applicants to the program will be considered for the Fellowship, unless they indicate otherwise in their letter of application.
