Does anyone out there have a faithful rainbike, MTB, etc. that they would like to get refinished? The Banana Boy track bikes are almost done, and we are going to get the powdercoated the middle of next week. We have not yet definitively decided on a color, but the current leaning is towards a dark, metallic purple. To economize, we are going to get all the bikes done in the same color (besides, matching bikes are cool, as long as you can tell which one is yours). For those of you who don't know, powdercoating is an extremely tough, scratch-resistant finish which is transferred to the bike using a powerful electric current (like a galvanizing process). It is supposedly much more durable than regular paint, and the company we're using has a wide array of colors which look good. Frames must be stripped of all components before treatment, so you will have to be w/o your bike for about 3-4 days. Treatment includes sandblasting to remove old paint, masking of chrome if you have any and want to preserve it, and a rust-deterring phosphate dip. Cost of powdercoating will run between $40 and $50 depending on how fancy you want to get (i.e. depending on how much chrome masking costs) and on how many frames we do at the same time; i.e., near-zero marginal costs imply average costs which are diminishing in Q. Send me some email if you have any questions or if you want me to stop polluting the uwracing list with economic jargon. Ta .
