Sender: "Lukens-Bull, Katryne A." To: ph-assess@u.washington.edu Subject: Joint Conference and Training Needs X-mailer: Connect2-SMTP 4.00 MHS to SMTP Gateway I wanted to give you each a "heads up" and ask you to complete this "survey": Several people in DOH recently got together to discuss the issue of training and whether or not the Joint Conference was an appropriate or workable venue for this type of activity. Several issues came up in this discussion including that there is a need for training in data and assessment methods, software and technology; and that the Joint Conference may offer too many competing sessions and/or be too expensive for the appropriate staff to attend to be the best source to accomplish this. Therefore, the group decided it would like to poll those of you who have been participating in this process about how we can improve the conference offerings and whether training should occur in other venues. First, I want to reiterate that we are talking specifically about training: in methods, applications, data bases, and related processes that might be used in conjunction with data. Some examples of what has been offered in the past are: VISTA training, Internet training, research methods, BRFSS and other survey methods, qualitative data, data presentation skills, etc. What we would like from you is your thoughts on this particular topic, 1. How well it is working to have trainings at the Joint Conference 2. How can we improve the data trainings at the Joint Conference 3. Are there other mechanisms as workable for transmitting this type of information (can some of the information be offered via print or the Internet or is some type of interactive method necessary) 4. What you think we could work towards to offer this information in a accessible way to a broader audiences. 5. What would you like to see? 6. How can we reach people throughout the state in an economical way? 7. Please feel free to brainstorm--the more ideas the better at this point. We will summarize your responses in document to provide to Janice Taylor, our DOH training coordinator, to send forward to others in the department to look at where we are and are not effectively meeting needs and discuss how we might improve data training activities. We are very interested in your thoughts on this topic and encourage you to respond. Please respond directly to Vicki Hohner by May 22. If you have any questions, she will be happy to respond after May 18 (she is on vacation until then). Thank you again for your past assistance and your continuing efforts to help us provide ongoing quality training to data users in the state.
