Due to the sudden and unexpected relocation of one of Maryland's finest Latin teachers, the Latin program at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Silver Spring, Montgomery County, Maryland will need a teacher THIS year (the 2000-2001 school year). Bethesda and Chevy Chase are fashionable, affluent communities in Suburban Maryland, located just minutes from Northwest Washington, DC. Bethesda, as an edge city, has a very urban feel, while Chevy Chase is more residential. Both cities are very popular communities in which to live and work. The Montgomery County Public School System is the highest-ranked in the State of Maryland, and the County itself is very committed to continually increasing the resources of and raising the standards of the system to ensure that it continues to be world class. Under the direction of the former Latin teacher, the Latin program at B-CC has grown and expanded - it is now a full time program with a tradition of participation in such activities as the Junior Classical League, the National Latin Examination, and the Medusa Mythology Examination. The Washington Metropolitan region is a wonderful place to teach Latin. The University of Maryland, Catholic University of America, and George Mason University are close by for further academic enrichment. There are myriad field trip opportunities in the area, including the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore, Latin Day at the University of Maryland, and numerous museums and galleries in Washington. The city of Washington itself, the capital of the World, is of course heavily influenced by Classics. The region is home to both the National Latin Exam and the Medusa Mythology Exam Committees, and is also marked by numerous annual Certamina and strong, active, and supportive professional associations and Junior Classical Leagues. Public schools in Montgomery County open on September 5, 2000. For more information about the position and the program, please contact: Georgia Alexakis, former Latin teacher, B-CC High School alexalex@sprynet.com To apply for the position, please contact: Catherine Harvey, Principal, B-CC High School (301) 649-8280 http://www.mcps.k12.md.us/schools/bcchs/ Please consider applying for this position.
