The school's service-learning partnership with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health was recognized with a 2000 Linkages Award from the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice. Dr. Villaneuva's biosketch appears below. While on campus, she will be consulting with members of the School of Public Health's practice-based MPH curriculum committee. Dr. Villaneuva is also available to lead a seminar on MCP-Hahnemann's innovative practice-based MPH curriculum, and meet with colleagues who may be interested in talking with her one-on-one or in small groups. Stay tuned for more details. Sarena D. Seifer Research Assistant Professor, UW Department of Health Services Executive Director, Community-Campus Partnerships for Health ---------- AUGUSTA M. VILLANUEVA, Ph.D. Dr. Villanueva is an Assistant Professor in the School of Public Health at MCP Hahnemann University. She earned her doctorate in medical sociology from The University of Texas at Austin, and completed postdoctoral training in health policy studies at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Villanueva's research interests focus on community public health and health policy. Her areas of interest include the health status of vulnerable populations; the role of race, culture and ethnicity on health and health outcomes; and the use of qualitative methodologies in community-based research. She has secured grant support from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, and The Pew Charitable Trusts to develop community-academic partnerships. As a member of the School's Center for Community Health and Prevention, Dr. Villanueva has a teaching role in the community assessment and interdisciplinary curricular blocks, and is responsible for the Introduction to Service-Learning for first year public health students. The program aims to instill in students values founded on respect for and partnership-building with communities, attitudes fostering collaboration rather than intervention, and recognition of indigenous strengths and assets in neighborhoods to enhance population health. She also serves on several national technical review committees sponsored by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. .
