It's an accusation or at least a = negative evaluation. Marrou probably thinks the sophists habitually = behaved in this way. Plato would probably have agreed. But Socrates as = represented by Plato in his works often seems to be arguing for victory. = Eristic? It is more than merely a descriptive term and you have to = make up your own mind in each case.
