my quotations -- some fascinating and very informative answers!
Someone described 2 of the quotations as 'rather off colour' and someone
else wondered where they were quoted from! I am in the last stages of
editing a collection of late 18th and early 19th-century memoirs of the
British feminist Mary Wollstonecraft (d. 1797). After her death her husba=
nd
wrote a biography, in which he revealed (with the purest of motives) that=

she had lived with a man whom she had not married, and given birth to a
child out of wedlock before she married him. This brought a stream of abu=
se
from the conservative press, who seized on Godwin (the husband) and
Wollstonecraft as examples of 'Jacobin" (ie radical, Revolutionary)
morality (=3Dimmorality, of course). So the 2 -off-color' quotations are
bringing in classical scholarship to prove the point, basically, that she=

was a whore and he was a pimp. The 3rd one (Horace) is from a Defence of
her character and conduct.
