Has he been employed and earning wages since then? Has he started school, and if so, when? Winter Quarter? If he hasn't been in school since July 98 and if he's been earning a wage since July 98, he probably has been making enough to support himself and be eligible for independent status. In such cases, when students don't have a tax return covering the past five months, I have them submit documentation on their income and expenses during that period of time.
