Message-Id: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII It actually looks as if we are going to be all right, after all. According to yet unofficial reports, we will remain intact until people start retiring, after which they intend to reduce us by four positions. The President apparently also instructed the Dean to give us the vacancy (a Lecturer in Russian) which we advertized last year but were not allowed to fill. In the meantime, we have been allowed to accept both new majors and new graduate students. Cuts along the line, from 11 people (with the filled vacancy) to 7, are still unfortunate but we do have time -- and a new president and, possibly, largely a new administration -- to attempt to reverse it. In the future, we will also try to pursue other venues of raising funds in order to make ourselves less vulnerable to cuts and eliminations. I would like to offer my profound thanks to the subscribers to slavic-uw for all their letters, support, and help. I am also officially relinquishing my job as a list coordinator and am opening the list to other discussions concerning the field of Slavic Studies in general. Having this forum to vent one's anger, frustration and occasionally hopes, and feeling the support and encouragement of so many people in this community, as well as all across the country, and even the world, was of immense importance and help to all of us. As far as I am concerned,I know for sure that slavic-uw was instrumental in keeping me going and relatively sane at the same time. OGROMNOE I SERDECHNOE SPASIBO! Galya Diment .
