However, since the events are NIDRR sponsored I thought you would find them of interest even if you can't attend. The area of AT, and specifically the accessiblity of Sun's Java products, and Microsoft's Office suite of products is attracting a lot of attention on the electronic list circuit. Microsoft, Sun, and IBM are all spending a lot on research in this area (accessibility) and this meeting will be held on Microsoft's Redmond campus. Jodie Haselkorn, MD, MPH (physiatrist at the UW) will be lecturing at this particular event. For more information on this particular conference see the Washington Assistive Technology Aliance website: http://wata.org/meeting/notice.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notice of Regional Assistive Technology Public Meeting and Request for Comments Date: Wednesday, March 4th, 1998 Times: 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM Place: Redmond Washington, Microsoft Campus (located near intersection of 156th Ave NE and NE 31st St.), Building 43, Room 1560 (See Maps / Driving Directions ). The National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) in the Department of Education is holding five public meetings nationwide to gather information from public officials, consumers, families, service providers, representatives of business, advocates, community groups and other stakeholders (1) on existing and future needs for assistive technology devices and services in a rapidly changing environment, (2) systemic barriers to meeting those needs, and (3) successful approaches that have removed barriers to assistive technology for individuals with disabilities. NIDRR is particularly interested in testimony that would assist with the development of nationwide policy on assistive technology to address current and future AT needs of individuals with disabilities. An announcement about the meetings was published in the Federal Register on December 24, 1997. Additional information will be published in the Federal Register at a later date. Eleven western states and two US territories will be represented at the March 4th public meeting which is coordinated by the Washington Assistive Technology Alliance. Five panels (each consisting of four to seven invited speakers) will present testimony on AT issues related to: Health Care, Employment, Education, Electronic Access, and AT Service Delivery. The meeting will conclude with a maximum of thirty minutes for public comments limited to three minutes per individual. Others may submit written testimony as noted below. NIDRR invites written comments that may be submitted at the meeting, via mail or electronic mail. The comments should be addressed to Ms. Nell Bailey, RESNA Technical Assistance Project, 1700 N. Moore St., Suite 1540, Arlington, VA 22209; electronic mail address: nbailey@resna.org. It is strongly encouraged that hard copy testimony be accompanied by an ASCII text file on disk. Written comments should be received by April 30, 1998. The meeting site is accessible to individuals with disabilities. To request disability accommodation contact the person listed in this notice no later than February 17, 1998. We will attempt to meet a request received after that date, however the requested auxiliary aid or service may not be available because of insufficient time to arrange it.
