URGENT! Action Alert Action Alert Action Alert Action Alert Action Alert Action Alert FUNDING FOR BICYCLE PRIJECTS IN JEOPARDY! AGAIN!! Thw Washington State House Transportation Committee has taken HALF of the $5.4 million currently available for bicycle projects around the state!!! We must stop this unfair raid before the budget is signed into law. Transportation Ehancements Funding is the federal money which local jurisdictions can compete for to fund bicycle, pedestrian, historic preservation and other projects. This year $5.4 million is available. The House Transportation Committee voted to earmark $2.7 million to specific projects which did not go through local processes. ($700,000 for storm drainage projects & $2 million to develop a trail corridor from Ellensburg to Lind.) IMPLICATIONS * Washington State has an approved public process in place by which Enhanmcement projects are recommended for funding at the LOCAL LEVEL to the state Enhancement Advisory Committee. This move by the Legislature sets a precedent of subverting that process. * Last year, the Enhancement Advisory Committee placed a 50% cap on the amount of Enhancement funds available for bicycle projects. Under this cap $2.7 million of the $5.4 millionwhould be availalbe for bike projects. IF $2.7 MILLION IS EARMARKED FOR THESE TWO PROJECTS IT IS POSSIBLE THAT BIKE FUNDING MAY BE LIMITED TO HALF OF THAT -- $1.35 MILLION STATE-WIDE. * The legislature is currently debating the future of portions of the John Wayne Trail between Ellensburg and Lind as rail is returned to that corridor. One proposal requires that the railroad fully midigate the impact of the trail. By earmarking $2 million from Enhancment Funding, the legislature is sacrificing other crucial bicycle projects for a trail that the railroad SHOULD PAY FOR to use the corridor. IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED Call your state Representative today and tell them that you do not support the Enhacements budget in SUB2343 because it subverts an established public process that calls for local input. Tell them that you beleive the John Wayne Trail should be mitigated with a franchise agreement and that the integrity of the Enhancments process must remain in tact. You can reach your legislator via the Legislative Hotine, 1-800-562-6000. NEXT STEPS If this bill passes the Hosue -- which is likely -- it will be forwarded to the Senate. Call your senator with the same message before Feb 26th. They can be reached at 1-800-562-6000. And just to make sure, call the Governors office at 360/753-6780.
