From the early 80s to the present, Makanin's reputation has steadily grown both at home and abroad. Among his best works of the 1980s are Antileader, the Loss, and A Man and a Woman. In 1991, the year the Soviet Union collapsed, he published a short novel entitled The Escape Hatch, which was named a finalist for the first Booker Russian novel prize in 1992. The following year Makanin won the Booker Prize for Baize-Covered Table with Decanter.
