ALEXANDER THE GREAT

Start now and you might be able to cash in big time if you can turn out a book on Alexander the Great. Expect Alexander to be a big seller come 2004. HBO has announced that Alexander will be the subject of its next big history series. The series, ten hours long in all, will cost $120 million. Mel Gibson's production company will oversee the project. No word yet on who will star. The series will be based on MARY RENAULT'S books about Alexander. That may mean the public will be in for a shock; Renault contended that Alexander liked men. (The last big HBO series was based on STEPHEN AMBROSE'S Band of Brothers.)
