Committee: Richard Palmer and Derek Booth "Evaluating Drought Response Plans for the Atlanta Metropolitan Region Using a Water Management Simulation Model" The state of Georgia experienced one of its worst droughts in history between 1998 and 2001. The drought had a large impact on the water resources of the state. Lake Sydney Lanier, a multipurpose reservoir that supplies 80% of the Atlanta Metropolitan Region's water supply, has not been full since June 1998. Other reservoirs in the state have reached some of their lowest levels in history. A water management simulation model of the Atlanta Metropolitan Region was created in a shared vision process to evaluate operational alternatives and drought response plans. Stakeholders in the region identified the region's water needs and defined the objectives of the study. Drought indicators were tested for effectiveness against 62-years of hydrologic data. The most effective indicators were combined into drought response plans. Each plan triggers four levels of water-use restrictions. The percentages of demand reduction from each level of restriction were modified from the original suggestions of the regional water supply managers. Drought response plans with specific indicators, trigger levels, and goal percentages of demand reductions are recommended to each water supplier. > Marcia Buck > Graduate Advising Office, More 201F > Dept. of Civil & Environmental Engineering > University of Washington > Box 352700 > Seattle, WA 98195-2700 > (206) 543-2574 > email: ceginfo@u.washington.edu > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > .
