This is a great way to check our early season fitness and compare yourself against some of the best cyclists in the Northwest! This is a 10 mile time trial (out and back) that DOESN'T require a USCF license. We did this to draw more than the typical USCF racing crowd. We would like to get more people involved! If this first race goes well, we will do another at the end of the year. The details are below, but email me (mailto:erik@synopsys.com) with any questions/comments/concerns. We didn't go with USCF licenses, it is early season so everyone is slow. Here is a brain-dump on how to time trial from my 15+ years of experience. What to expect, do and don't do: 1) In a time trial, the racers start at a fixed time by themselves. In this race, your start time will be based on the order in which you registered. So, if you are the 34th person to register you will start your TT at 9:33 and your number will be 133. Don't be late! 2) The race officials will call your name about 5-10 minutes before. Make sure that you are warmed up before you get called. Before you start, there will be someone to hold your bike so that we can begin with your feet clipped in. A tip here, start your computer or watch when the person in front of you goes, this way you won't have to fumble with it at your own start. The official will give you a count down until your start. Also, if this is your first TT let them know and they will help you out more. 3) The course is very simple. You start at 218th and Green Valley Rd. and go as hard as you can for about 5 miles towards Auburn on Green Valley Rd. You will see some folks in the middle of the road and an orange cone. This is the turnaround point. Slow down and turn around, the traffic should be stopped if there is any. Now, go back towards the starting line. The finish is across the road. Yell out your number as you as the officials! 4) Everyone will look like a triathlete because this is a time trial. You will see many funky looking bikes and even some wild outfits. 5) After the race, the officials will work hard to post the results. I would guess that it will take 45-60 minutes to finalize. Once posted the top three in each category will be given some prize money! I will post complete results on the web later. 6) After the race, don't bug the officials, it will slow them down. 7) Best not to do your warm up on the course, as there might be other racers competing on it. You don't want to interfere with their race. I always bring rollers or a stationary trainer 8) Most racers take their pumps and bags off the bike to save weight, your choice here. 9) Don't hang out by the start/finish line after your race, racers will be coming across the line hard. Might want to park the car at Flaming Geyser and ride to the start (about 2-3 miles). 10) Be nice to cars on the course, it won't be shut down, but there won't be very much traffic. Also, cars are still bigger than bikes! 11) If you are passing someone, let them know in a nice way like saying, 'on your left' Don't get too close and don't draft for long. 12) If you are getting passed, hold your line or move to the right. You don't need to slow down Don't be intimidated by anyone. The only thing that you need to be concerned about that damn clock!! All the racers out there, from the fastest to the slowest have an opportunity to do their best and their results depend only on their effort. That is why time trials are called 'The race of truth' Let me know if you have any other questions, -Erik .
