Can anyone help me answer this question from a former student?

	Very presently, I 
     am confronted wherever I turn with the phenomenon "Medusa" - an 
     absolutely mesmerizing figure in ancient history, going far beyond the 
     severed head turning Perseus' enemies into stone -
     Is there any serious literature studying the historical development of 
     this figure (obviously going back as far as to the Libyan Amazons) ?
