There's a Punic Wars parallel, too, in his Livy citation mentioned here
before: Fabius's confidence that the Romans were *basically* secure in
their own country--begging the question of Umbria and Campania as
Roman--and needn't rush into battle with Hannibal--Carthaginians would =
not
be able to hold out forever in territory not theirs. This would have =
been
more suited to the First Gulf War, I guess.=20

Has anyone noted (Byrd hasn't, I think) the Hanno : Hannibal =3D G. H. =
W.
Bush : G. W. Bush parallel, on the vengeful obsession front? The result
there was that a powerful empire, dependent on hired troops and devoted =
to
the interests of a commercial elite, overextended itself against an =
enemy
it didn't understand, and failed.

Political junkies who have been listening to NPR's coverge
today of the debate in both chambers on the resolution
concerning Iraq have heard WV's Senator Byrd mention John of
Salisbury's account (citation?) of the death of Nero (sword
to throat like the Senate) as well as just a few minutes ago
recall the *Novus Ordo Saeclorum* motto ... as representing
the administration's desired change from previous approach
to the constitutional balance of power among the three
branches of government. (I missed about 2 hrs., so there may
have been more.)
