Classical angle: the medievalist Luitpold Wallach once told me that when he was imprisoned in Dachau, the one thing most responsible for keeping him sane was his having memorized pages and pages of Horace when he was a schoolboy. Now "Doc" Wallach was a very tough man, and for him to say this as a confession (which I think it almost was, for him) gave it the ring of truth.
