Three more Bruin teams finished their seasons with credible finishes in the NCAA tournament. MEN'S BASEBALL -------------- The UCLA baseball team, finishing up their season with some non- conference games, lost to Pepperdine, 5-1 last week. The only positive was junior third baseman Zac Ammirato, who extended his hitting streak to 15 games. WOMEN'S SOFTBALL ---------------- The women's softball team finished their regular season schedule with a sweep of Cal Poly SLO, 7-0 and 2-1. Sophomore shortstop Nicole Odom hit a grand slam in the first game. However, despite their 41-6 record and #2 national ranking, the NCAA in it's infinite wisdom decided to send UCLA to South Carolina for regional playoffs for the second straight year. They will face the dreaded Campbell Camels (47-23) in the first round. Seven UCLA softball players were named to the All-Conference team. Senior third baseman Jennifer Brundage made the first team for the third consecutive year, while Shortstop Odom and junior second baseman Kelly Howard also made first team. Senior outfielder Jennifer Brewster, junior pitcher Tanya Harding, soph pitcher B'Ann Burns, and soph first baseman Alleah Poulson made second team. Harding was named Newcomer of the Year and Sharron Backus and Sue Enquist were named co-Head Coach of the Year. MEN'S TRACK ----------- Senior John Godina nearly made good on his promise to hit 70 feet in the shot put this year with a throw of 69-2 at the Modesto Relays. He also had a 69-1 effort and two fouls over 70 feet. His mark is the best in the world this year. He also added a 202-9 in the discus. Junior Mark Parlin, overshadowed by Godina all year, moved into third place in the NCAA with a put of 62-7 3/4. WOMEN'S TRACK ------------- Freshman Suzy Powell, competing in her home town of Modesto, broke her own American junior record in the discus with a throw of 190-6. However, senior Dawn Dumble won the event at 194-2. WOMEN'S TENNIS -------------- After beating #9 Wake Forest in the NCAA first round, 5-1, the UCLA women's tennis team suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Stanford in the quarterfinals. Needing only one more win to clinch the match, the #1 Bruin doubles team was up 5-1 in the third set, but somehow lost in a tie breaker, 7-6. UCLA hopes to have more sucess in the individual championships this week as they have the top two singles players in the nation. MEN'S TENNIS ------------ The men's tennis team beat Fresno St and South Alabama to make the NCAA semi-finals, where they were also knocked off by Stanford. After UCLA won the doubles point, the Cardinal swept four straight singles matches to win, 4-1. Stanford went on to win the national championship. WOMEN'S WATER POLO ------------------ The women's water polo team finished 5th the NCAA tournament last weekend. After losing to eventual champion Slippery Rock, 9-7 and San Diego St., 7-4, they beat Harvard, 14-1, Maryland, 9-2, and Michigan, 7-6 to place fifth. WOMEN'S GOLF ------------ The women's golf team finished seventh at the NCAA Western Regionals last weekend to qualify for the NCAA Championships in two weeks. They will be joined by Pac-10 teams Arizona St., Stanford, Oregon, USC, Arizona, and Washington. .
