Hi, I'm a graduate student in epidemiology working on a fieldwork project for which I need to calculate the population density for 1990 ZIP codes. So far I've got the population data I need, but nothing for land area. I recently found out that land area data for ZIP codes were never included in the 1990 Census. (There is a column for it in STF3B but all the values are blank). According to their Geography division, the Census Bureau never had polygon information for 1990 ZIP codes, but instead created a "ZIP to Block Equivalency file" to tabulate the population data. The 1990 ZIP to Block Equivalency file appears to be available through the MABLE'98 Geocorr v3.0 database (http://plue.sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/plue/geocorr/). Have any of you used MABLE for this purpose? Or, know of a better or perhaps easier way to do this? I am currently exploring the private vendor options, so far without success. As per their respective sales reps, GeoLytics 1990 Census discs do not include land area and GDT no longer has their 1990 ZIP Code product(s) available. Does anyone know of another company I can try?
