In 1998 he lost the only close Congressional race in the state, getting 64,127 votes while his opponent Robert C. "Robin" Hayes got 67,505. Hayes is a first-termer; in 1996 he was the unsuccessful Republican candidate for governor. The 8th district is in the south central part of North Carolina, east of Charlotte and just north of the South Carolina state line; it includes Fort Bragg. Why the US government named a military base after Braxton Bragg, a Confederate general, is beyond me, unless it was to recognize that his generalship contributed to the eventual Union victory. Michael Taylor's book, _The Tyrant Slayers_, was first published by Arno in 1981. George Pesely, Austin Peay State Univ., Clarksville, Tennessee peselyg@apsu.edu http://www.apsu.edu/peselyg/ .
