Experts, citizens to examine the issues at Seattle's Town Hall Puget Sound citizens are invited to participate in free public forums where the crisis in the Balkans will be discussed and debated by experts and activists from a variety of viewpoints. The first of the planned series of weekly town meetings will take place Tuesday, April 13, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Town Hall in Seattle. Town Hall is a newly opened community cultural center at 8th & Seneca, one block east of the downtown freeway. Moderator for the first Kosovo Forum will be Barry Mitzman of KCTS-TV. Public radio's Sandy Bradley will welcome the audience and present a short program of music from the Balkans. Audience participation will be encouraged, and relief agencies are invited to set up informational booths in the lobby. Discussion on April 13 will focus on human rights, strategic issues, and the refugee crisis. Among the panelists will be: - Robert Van Leeuwen, for 19 years a field officer with the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and an expert on refugee politics and humanitarian diplomacy in Bosnia and Asia; - Vladimir Raskin, research associate at the Jackson School of International Studies and president of the Human Rights Foundation for a Civil Society in Moscow; - Judith Kolokoff, regional director of the American Friends Service Committee and an opponent of the NATO bombing; - Lt. Gen. William H. Harrison (U.S. Army ret.), who served widely in the U.S. and overseas and is now mayor of Lakewood. - Bruce Kochis, director of the UW Human Rights Education and Research Network and a specialist in Eastern Europe and comparative human rights; - Jill Cole of Children's Hospital, who has just returned from Yugoslavia, where she was working with the STAR project, an Albanian-run project for women and children in Kosovo (tentative). The Kosovo Forums will continue weekly at Town Hall on Tuesday nights as events dictate. Sponsored by the non-profit Town Hall Association, the forums are intended to help citizens gain a more solid understanding of the complex issues in the Balkans, and to provide local residents with opportunities to help the refugees and find humane resolutions of the crisis.
