In general, Windows modems do not work with Linux.  The reason why is that
the modem relies on a very fast CPU to do some of the signal processing,
and those algorithms are very proprietary.  The test is to see what kind
of CPU is required for the modem to operate: if it needs a fast pentium,
it won't work on Linux, but if it will work on a '486 or a '386 (or a
'286), then it ought to work with Linux.

The WinModem ought to be the smoking gun in the DOJ case against the Evil
Empire.
