Date: Mon, 06 Apr 1998 12:34:51 -0700 From: Peter VanVleet Hey gang, Emerson has already tallied up the results for this past weekend. You can find them at: http://weber.u.washington.edu/~tongcoec/Conference Simply put, we kicked ass this weekend, easily winning every competition as a team. We now have a comfortable lead in both the National Points total and the Conference Championship points total. You guys did a great job! The Men's A at volunteer park started with 8 riders, but in a slight disappointment, only 4 finished in the top 10. I can assure everyone that Paul will not start another crit in the small chainring. However, it was the women who came to the rescue with a 1,2,3,5 punch that saved the day for national points. Laura almost lapped the field and Beth got her revenge on "that WSU woman". The Men's B also finished strongly with a 1,2,3,4,6,7 finish that easily secured our hold on the conference championship point totals. Matt managed to live down his fears on being beaten by a B rider by taking the B field sprint in a commanding fashion. While Volunteer Park was a relatively short and uneventful crit that ended in pack sprints, Vashon Island proved to be a race of attrition. That and it was rumored that some anger resident of Vashon Island was throwing nails on the road (which would explain the many flats). In the Men's A race only 4 (out of 16) riders finished the race in the pack, 2 UW and 2 OSU. Unfortunately, in the mix of the Cat 1,2 riders UW didn't take the top spots in the pack sprint but had to settle for 2nd and 4th. However, with additional depth of David Sarruf (7th) and Richard Juntunen (8th) we easily took the point totals. The women also did a superb job taking 1,3,4. It certainly was nice to have our women's team a full strength this weekend, further boosted by the addition of Marnie Tyler. In the men's B, Tim took the top spot. Tony, who rumored has it, crashed at the 200M line, managed to pick up his bike and run across the line for 2nd place. So remember, the only acceptable excuse for not finishing a race is a broken bone, especially the L1 vertbrae. While probably a short aberration, currently UW holds the top spots in both the Men's A (me) and Men's B (Tony) individual omniums. Top of the world Ma! I think this week's best new rider acknowledgement goes to David Sarruf, who was the second highest men's A Husky at Volunteer Park and the third highest men's A Husky at Vashon Island. Too bad David hasn't yet figured out how to subscribe to uwracing, and hence will never see this message. And finally, it was nice to have the chance to race with Ben again, even if he did throw-up four times after the Volunteer Park pack sprint. See you guys next weekend, Peter .
