Legislation has been passed in South Africa recognizing traditional healers 
as health care professionals (September 9, 2004). The new law which creates 
a Council to oversee registration of traditional healers and authorizes 
them to treat and collect fees for the treatment of a range of diseases 
(traditional healers are barred from diagnosing and treating terminal 
diseases such as HIV/AIDs and cancer).
