As you might know this group is very active in SE-Asia using participatory approaches in which IKS play a role. I would be very interested in receiving any information concerning IKS and Integrated Pest Management. My mailing address is: Uwe Voortman AGPP, C-736 FAO Via delle Terme di Caracalla 00100 Rome, Italy Regards Uwe Voortman Dear Mr. Voortman, Thanks for your reaction. In Leiden university we have the LEAD programme. It stands for Leiden Ethnosytems and Development. Jan Slikkerveer and I work wit a team on IKS in agriculture. The study is funded by the EEC and involves partners in Indonesia and Kenya and Greece (Crete). At the moment we have compiled a bibliography of 2000 titles on IKS and Agriculture. We hope to publish it soon. The other line of activity is to develop a methodology where it becomes possible to gather and document IKS from farmers which contains knowledge about customs, procedures and techniques that are sustainable but which are at threat to disappear because they are indigeous, backward or not western. For this we are doing now a pilotstudy in Indonesia (Halim area) and Kenya. In August the results of the pilotstudy will be analyzed. Next year we will do the mainstudy in both countries where we develop the methodology and test it also for other regions. The activities of LEAD are published in the Indigenous Knowledge & development Monitor which is now online for internet. If you have gopher or a world wide web server please look for Leiden university, under oasis, institute of social & cultural studies; research. You can download the whole issue free. This month the long due textbook or Bible of Warren, Brokensha and Slikkerveer on IK is published at Intermed. Techn. In England. About 600 pages( Keeps you off the street). If possible can you send me some information on the work FA is doing in this field? Please keep in touch. Sincerely yours, Dr.Wim Dechering (secretary of LEAD) .
