US Systematics Collections (ASC)/NBS
to develop two directories of resource 
 
The World Species List (WSL) looks forward to this effort.  We only 
hope that existing species information is free, accessible, and easy to 
download (not cryptic, not .exe, not coded, but rather, simple test, 
tab delineated files each record ending in both LF and CR).  
Historically, database owners have been taxonomists or the like and not 
environmentalists.  Species 
databases must be accessible.  We hope that the NBS works toward 
providing 
species lists to the public, not through or by scientists.  In other 
words, 
species information should be as common as the white pages of the US 
phone 
book.  WSL works to put all (not just selected) databases on the WWW.
