The Anabasis is one of my favorite books. The = style does not overwhelm my Attically-challenged Greek and the story is = still amazing. I bring the book on backcountry camping trips. Once, on = a very difficult canoe portage between mountain lakes in Ontario, = slogging through sweltering, mosquito-infested woods with two of my = kids, and running out of morale-boosting stories, I told them a highly = abridged version, culminating in the part where Xenophon rides from the = rear to the front because he hears shouting and fears a disturbance has = broken out, only to discover that the troops have finally caught sight = of water and are shouting "the sea!" The kids got into the spirit and = began shouting "thalatta" when they saw that we had finally reached the = lake that meant we could stop hiking and start paddling. Since then = "thalatta" has become a kind of in-joke in the household.
