Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable I got this from Vindolanda and thought I would pass it on.... Their web site is http://www.vindolanda.com/ ******************************************************** INTERNET APPEAL (from Robin Birley, director of the Vindolanda=20 Charitable Trust) =20 =20 Dear Internet Visitor, Thank you for logging on to our Vindolanda web site. If you have ever enjoyed a visit to Vindolanda, taken part in our=20 exciting excavation or education programmes, or if you have a general=20 interest in our work and are inspired by the wonderful discoveries=20 which emerge from the ground at Roman Vindolanda, we now ask for your=20 support in a time of crisis. Thirty years of impressive achievements in the areas of archaeology,=20 museums, access and education are severely threatened by the indirect=20 results of the current UK foot and mouth disease crisis. As an independent charitable Trust, we receive no form of annual=20 revenue other than that which we raise ourselves through admission=20 fees to our sites and sales in our museum shop. We start each year=20 with just enough reserves to fulfil our commitments until our visitor=20 revenue resumes. As a 'contained' site, with direct access from regular public roads,=20 we have been able to stay open to the public in this crisis. The=20 impression that the whole of our countryside is closed to visitors=20 has, however, seen the cancellation of school and group visits to the=20 end of May and beyond. The general daily visitor figures are grim,=20 and the predicted outlook for 2001 is that we are unlikely to reach=20 more than 50% of our projected income. The entire Vindolanda staff, many of whom have strong ties with local=20 farming families, have accepted immediate emergency measures, and=20 many have volunteered voluntary wage cuts and extra unpaid working=20 hours. All of our capital projects for 2001 have been postponed, with=20 the exception of the excavation and education work, which we are=20 fighting to keep going. Our estimated deficit through the lack of visitors will be =A382,000 by=20 the end of May. Initiatives to encourage people to return to the=20 countryside will take time to become effective, and we estimate that=20 even with every possible saving, we will have a deficit of some=20 =A3190,000 by the end of the 2001 season. The consequences for 2002 are=20 therefore very serious indeed. We know that we will have to rely upon our own determination to=20 recover, and also upon the goodwill of those who share our aims and=20 objectives - and care about the people of the past and present.=20 Please help us if you can. Any donation to our Appeal fund will be=20 gratefully received and personally acknowledged. Your contribution=20 could make a real difference.=20 ** We would also urge you to support our rural area by planning a=20 visit to Vindolanda. A list of delightful bed and breakfast=20 accommodation is linked to this site. These providers are open for=20 business, and can assure you of a warm Northumbrian welcome. SPECIAL MESSAGE from the Vindolanda staff to our Friends of=20 Vindolanda in USA, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand:=20 Thank you for your support through Friends subscriptions. We know=20 that many of you regularly visit our web site for excavation news and=20 updates. Please support this appeal if you can. Why not throw a Roman=20 fund raising party? If you do, please send us some pictures - we need=20 cheering up! =20 ********************************************************* Community email addresses: Post message: AncientGreece_Rome@onelist.com Subscribe: AncientGreece_Rome-subscribe@onelist.com Unsubscribe: AncientGreece_Rome-unsubscribe@onelist.com List owner: AncientGreece_Rome-owner@onelist.com Shortcut URL to this page: http://www.onelist.com/community/AncientGreece_Rome=20 Your use of Yahoo!
