DEFENDERS OF WILDLIFE Job Announcement Title: Wildlife Conservation Biologist Location: Defenders' main office, Washington, D.C. Supervisor: Director, Science Department Job Description: Defenders seeks to hire a wildlife conservation biologist with practical experience in programs to conserve wildlife and biodiversity in the US. The preferred candidate should have a strong science background, with an advanced degree in wildlife management, conservation biology or related field. The position answers to the Director of the Science Department (a rotating position), but also works closely with interdisciplinary teams. Should have some combination of experience with EISs, recovery plans, population biology, land management procedures, GIS, scientific research and policy analysis. Emphasis will be on conservation experience that is practical, with on-the-ground results. The position is responsible for providing scientific guidance to program staff and ensuring scientific accuracy of formal comments, testimony, legal positions and reports. Program emphasis is likely to be on conservation and recovery of selected endangered or at-risk species. This is not primarily a research or academic-oriented position and instead requires a great communicator with a "can-do," problem-solving mentality. Prefer at least two years experience with wildlife management or policy, either at the state or federal level. Must be committed to the mission of Defenders and to working in the DC area for at least three years. Duties: 1) Research and analyze scientific and technical issues relating to Defenders' programs; provide policy recommendations for conserving species and biodiversity and both private and public lands; work cooperatively with other members of Defenders' Science Department in developing and implementing various science projects. 2) Promote coordinated planning among federal and state agencies on a bioregional or ecosystem basis, designed to conserve representative samples of all ecosystems and landscape forms; assist with the development of recovery plans, conservation agreements, and habitat conservation plans for selected species. 3) Coordinate technical assistance necessary to support Defenders' litigation, particularly initiatives to conserve riparian species in the Southwest. 4) Assist with the development and implementation of national and regional strategies, campaigns, programs and projects for assigned program areas. 5) Assist with the writing of reports, testimony and factsheets and assure the scientific and technical accuracy of Defenders' publications. 6) Establish and maintain effective working relationships with leading conservation biologists, other scientists, wildlife managers, agency administrators, members of Congress, Congressional staff, leading NGOs, and regional activists. 7) Represent Defenders in coalitions, public meetings, hearings, press events, conferences, national and international forums, and in general communications with public officials, the media, members, the donor community and the public. 8) Be a committed and effective advocate for all Defenders' programs and objectives, performing other duties as assigned. Qualifications: 1) Graduate degree in wildlife management, conservation biology, vertebrate biology, ecology or related field of natural science. Good quantitative skills are a must. Familiarity with population biology and GIS would be helpful. 2) At least two years experience working on wildlife conservation issues, preferably developing and implementing programs to conserve species and biodiversity in the public or private sector. 3) Some knowledge of federal laws, programs and policies dealing with use and conservation of wildlife in the US; 4) Strong oral and written communication skills; 5) Ability to conduct secondary research, analyze information, and produce work-products in a consistent, efficient and timely manner; 6) Other relevant experience with education, public policy, legislative procedures, grass-roots organizing, communications, editing and/or development. Good organizational skills a must. Salary commensurate with experience. Send resume, cover letter and salary history to Science Search, Defenders of Wildlife, 1101 Fourteenth Street, NW, Suite 1400, Washington, DC 20005. No phone calls, please.
