We will be announcing an April meeting shortly to discuss the RFP and future directions for the Partnership NW proposal. Jeff Ochsner, Michael Verchot and Sarena Seifer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has recently announced two funding opportunities through the Office of University Partnerships that are specifically aimed at higher educational institutions: Community Outreach Partnerships Center Program (COPC): The Community Outreach Partnerships Center (COPC) is designed to help colleges and universities apply their human, intellectual, and institutional resources to the challenge of revitalizing distressed communities. COPC provides funding to grantees who address at least three of the following areas: local housing, infrastructure, economic development, neighborhood revitalization, health care, job training, crime prevention, education, planning, and community organizing. You may address these issues by conducting and applying relevant research, coordinating outreach efforts with neighborhood groups and residents, acting as a local information exchange, galvanizing support for neighborhood revitalization, developing public service projects and instructional programs, and collaborating with other partnership centers. COPC is also designed as a vehicle for institutionalizing outreach and applied research in colleges and universities. You are eligible for the COPC program if your institution is a public or private nonprofit institution of higher education granting two- or four-year degrees and accredited by a national or regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Hispanic-serving Institutions Assisting Communities Program (HSIAC): The Hispanic-serving Institutions Assisting Communities (HSIAC) program is designed to help Hispanic-serving colleges and universities expand their role and effectiveness in addressing community development needs--neighborhood revitalization, housing, and economic development--in their localities. HSIAC funds grantees to carry out projects designed primarily to benefit low- and moderate-income residents, help prevent or eliminate slums or blight, or meet an urgent community development need in the community where the Hispanic-serving institution (HSI) is located. You are eligible for the HSIAC program if your institution is a nonprofit institution of higher education and meets the statutory definition of an Hispanic-serving Institution contained in Title V of the 1998 Amendments to the Higher Education Act of 1965. In order for you to meet this definition, at least 25 percent of the full time undergraduate students enrolled in your institution must be Hispanic and not less than 50 percent of these Hispanic students must be low-income individuals. Completed application kits for both programs are due on or before 12:00 midnight, Eastern time on June 9, 1999, at HUD headquarters. To request an application kit for either or both of these programs, please call the SuperNOFA hotline at 1-800-HUD- 8929. Both application kits are also available to download off the Office of University Partnerships web site at . .
